Wernher von Braun

(1912-1977)

Wernher von Braun was one of the most important contributors to rocket developers and champions in space during the period between the 1930s and 1970s.He was inspired by Jules Verne and H.G. Wells during his youth with the possibilities of space exploration. During his teenage years he gained a strong interest in space flight and became involved with a German rocket society.While being involved with this work he received a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering.

Von Braun is a well known leader of what has been called the "rocket team," which developed the V-2 ballistic missile for the Nazis during World War II.The V-2s were manufactured at a forced labor factory called Mittelwerk

In 1950 von Braun and his team were transferred to HuntsvilleAlabama.During that time he led the army’s development team at RedstoneArsenal , resulting in the arsenal’s namesake: Redstone rocket.
