Structure of Pyrithione Zinc
Facts about Pyrithione Zinc:
Pyrithione
zinc was first compounded in the 1930's, and its primary function was as
an anti-fungal agent. Today, Pyrithione zinc is still seen as an anti-fungal
agent because it is the main active ingredient in Head and Shoulders dandruff
shampoo, as well as many other dandruff shampoos. Pyrithione Zinc
is a derivative of zinc and acts as an antibacterial agent, as well as
the anti-fungal agent to fight many pathogenic microorganisms (streptococcus,
staphylococcus). This ingredient is used to control dandruff and
seborrheic dermatitis (inflammation of the skin pertaining to the excessive
discharge of sebum or oil). Pyrithione zinc reduces the itching and
flaking of the scalp associated with dandruff, which is an advantage to
those who experience these conditions.
