Potassium Nitrate, occurs as colorless, prismatic crystals or as a white powder; it is found pure in nature as the mineral saltpeter (or niter). It's solubility depends on the temperature of the water, being more soluble in hot water.

- Dentin can be exposed as gum tissue recedes or when the enamel is worn away
- When you eat foods that are hot, cold, sweet,or when you drink beverages; they reach the exposed dentin, they then cause the fluid in the dentinal tubules to move rapidly outward, resulting in pain.
- The use of Potassium Nitrate in Sensodyne forms a coating over the tooth, and protects it from the pain causing agents.
