Editor's Comments: Where
has the time gone? It is hard for me to believe that I am completing
my 20th year at ASU. The Department continues to change, with new
faculty joining our ranks and some old friends leaving us. It is with great
sadness I must tell you that two of our colleagues passed away this past
year, Drs. David Chittenden and David Jimerson. They will both be
missed. If you stop by the Department office, you will see some new faces.
Our secretaries Ms. Betty Pulford and Lisa Templeton moved on to other
on-campus appointments, but we are fortunate to have Ms. Rhonda Curbo and
Mary Wright join us. (I don't know if they will say the same). Dr.
Jon Russ has moved on to bigger, and hopefully better, things. The
Physics faculty have two new temporary faculty members to replace
Drs. Ammons and Daghigh. Dr. Li has stepped down as interim chair
and Dr. Johnson has taken on the task of running the Department.
The Arkansas Biosciences Institute building is complete and we are hoping
to be involved with the ABI program as well as strengthen our commitment
to the Environmental Sciences program. The Department is excited
about the future and the steps ASU is taking toward making our curriculum
a comprehensive experience for our students. We hope the alumni will continue
to support the Department and help welcome the new faculty as they come
on board. We would also like to hear from the alumni, not only to
let us know what you are doing, but to let us know what we are doing well,
and areas where we can improve.

Alumni eGroup - where has the Alumni eGroup gone? There hasn't been much activity lately, maybe we are all busier. Please let us hear from you. Allen Goad is still running the group. The web address is: http://www.egroups.com/group/ASU_Chemistry_Alumni
Others that sent letters or e-mails are:
Susan Deatherage Armstrong: says "I've been at Emerson Electric in Paragould for almost 7 years now. I work in the accounting dept. doing payroll. Rich is Director of Nursing at Skilcare Nursing Center in Jonesboro on Browns Lane. We don't have any kids except for our 10 year old basset-beagle, Toby."
Brad McNew: In May Brad finished his first year of pharmacy school. Only 2 more years of didactic course work, and only one for all of the clinicals. So far he's learned quit a bit, but next year is the beginning of therapeutics. So he's just now getting into the breadth of pharmacy. Over the summer Brad has been working at Medicine Shoppe International. St. Louis College of Pharmacy (STLCOP) selected Brad to represent them as a marketing intern.
Welcome: Drs. Kimberly Mace, Carolyn Dowling, Richard Lloyd and Larry Weaver have joined us this year. Dr. Weaver says "Since receiving my PhD from the physics department at Indiana University Bloomington, I have taught physics in various temporary positions around the country and have pursued my interest in physics education research." Dr. Mace comes to us from the University of Colorado, Dr. Dowling from Rochester University and Dr. Lloyd from Iowa State.
Good luck: to Dr. Jon Russ, who is moving on to be the Chairperson at Rhodes College in Memphis. Jon played a vital role in the Department and helped educate numerous students in both the classroom and in the laboratory.
Congratulations: Dr. Robyn Hannigan has been appointed to the National Academy of Science Board on Earth Sciences and Resources. As a nationally recognized expert in earth science, Dr. Hannigan will participate in board meetings twice a year in Washington, D.C. to guide the collection of scientific knowledge and advice on the nation's most important problems.
Congratulations: Dr. Bao-An Li, winner of the 2004 "Dean's Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award" College of Science and Mathematics, ASU
Promotion: Dr. Bao-An Li was promoted to Professor of Physics, and based on current and past newsletters, you can see this honor is well deserved. Congratulations Dr. Li.
Chittenden Scholarship: Ms. Ruby Chittenden endows the David M. Chittenden Chemistry Scholarship to be presented to a junior or senior chemistry major. The Department would like to thank Ruby for her generous contribution.
Other news:
Dr. Tillman Kennon served as President (2005) of the Arkansas
Science Teachers Association (ASTA). He will assume the duties of
Past President in 2006.
Dr. Juliet M. Hahn was a Session Chair in Organic Chemistry Division Asymmetric Reactions and Synthesis Session papers 50-61 at the 228th National ACS Meeting, Philadelphia, 2004. Also, Dr. Hahn was an Invited reviewer for a research proposal for the Cooperative Grants Program of the US Civilian Research and Development Foundation Proposals. Dr. Hahn was also an ad hoc reviewer for the National Science Foundation.
Department Seminar Series: The 2004 calendar year had a diverse group of presentations. The Department Seminar Series featured Mr. Edwin Faughn, Space Artist, art director for the Sharpe Planetarium (formerly the Pink Palace Planetarium) in Memphis, Tennessee, Dr. Brad Edgar, Arkansas State University, Dr. Sergey Kudryashov, Arkansas State University, Dr. Lie-Wen Chen, Texas A&M, Dr. Cheuk-Yin Wong, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Dr. Zi-Wei Lin, University of Alabama, Huntsville, Dr. Kenneth Nollett, Argonne National Laboratory, Dr. Tony A. Hall, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Dr. Bill Baker, University of South Florida, Dr. Scott Pratt, Michigan State University, Dr. Andrew V. Pakhomov, University of Alabama, Huntsville, Dr. Marty Campbell, Henderson State University, and Dr. Jorge Lopez, University of Texas at El Paso. The seminars are open to the public. Feel free to attend.
During the past year, the Department of Chemistry and Physics has continued to publish articles in national/international journals and state/regional journals. In addition, scholarly presentations have been made at state, regional, national and international meetings. Many of these papers have been presented by students who participated in the research. Our students have played an important role in the research and presentations of our Department. The department has also received funding from outside sources and may receive additional funding from grants which are now in review. A listing of our activities is found below:
ASU scientists receive $12 million Dept. of Defense
contract
ASU received the news the end of last week that the 2005 Department
of Defense appropriations bill which included a $12 million contract for
ASU scientists was signed by President George W. Bush. The contract includes
two projects which will be conducted by Dr. Susan D. Allen, Research
and Academic Affairs; Dr. Robyn Hannigan, Chemistry; Dr. Bruce
Johnson, Physics; Dr. William Burns, Chemistry; Dr. Scott
Reeve, Chemistry; and Dr. Sergey Kudryshov, Physics. The scientists
will work with two other universities to research and create remote detection
techniques for minute levels of nuclear, chemical and biological substances.
One of the programs, SHADES (Standoff Hazardous Agent Detection Equipment
System) will be used to detect nuclear and chemical particles for the location
of weapons of mass destruction. The other program, SSRID (Standoff
Sensor for Radionuclide Identification) will detect particles to determine
contamination levels from such weapons.
Grants: Several of the Faculty have received grants this year. Funding helps support research and teaching efforts in the department. Grants include:
Publications: The Department has been active in publishing their research. The publications include:
Presentations: The faculty and students of the Department of Chemistry and Physics have made numerous presentations over the past year. These include:
