Penicillin V(Veetids)

Antibiotic

Penicillin V treats infections due to susceptible strains of the following organisms: streptococci, pneumococci, and staphylococci.  It also treats the disease known as Vincent's   Disease(Fusospirochetusis).  It will also aid in the treatment of bacterial endocarditis prophylaxis in patients with acquired valvular heart disease.  Penicillin V inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis via acylation of the transpeptidase enzyme.  This acylation occurs in the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis and is believed to be due to the structural similarity of the penicillin nucleus to D-alanyl-D-alanine.  Penicillin V is susceptible to destruction by beta-lactamase producing bacteria. Penicillin V is administered in 250mg and 500mg.
