Xanax is a medication classified as a benzodiazepine.  It is primarily used to treat anxiety and panic disorders, though it may also be used in the treatment of some depressions.  It is thought that Xanax acts on areas of the central nervous system to produce sedative and muscle relaxant effects.  This helps to reduce a person's overall anxiety level.  Reducing a person's anxiey allows for optimal mental function so that he may participate in his everyday activities.
