Abstract:  Sub-picosecond structural solid-solid and solid-liquid ("cold melting") phase transitions of semiconductors and semimetals are well-known for the last two decades. Although they have already used, e.g., in ultrafast X-ray Bragg or optical switches, further practical applications of these phenomena are absent because understanding of their mechanisms is still lacking. Some recent experimental results and theories related to these phase transitions are discussed.
