Alcohol

Ethanol

Ethanol is an intoxicant and depressant.  It is found at college parties, and should be available in every kitchen.  Beer, wine, rum and other alcoholic beverages are used in many recipes to add taste and a little bit of fun to the meal.  The alcohol is obtained from the action of yeast on sugars in the absence of  Oxygen.  In the case of  beer and wine, the liquid is undistilled.  However, the hard liquors (the good stuff) are distilled to increase the concentration of  alcohol.  Ethanol is found in many prescription medications as a solvent.  It is also one of the most abused drugs in the United States of America.
